La Ceiba: The Sacred Tree of Life Grand Opening

La Ceiba: The Sacred Tree of Life by artist Ricardo Alarcón debuts Friday, October 27, 2023 starting at 5:00 p.m. Live music performances begin at 6:00 p.m. The art installation is part of a larger visual arts exhibition including the works of multiple artists. The theme for 2023 is La Ceiba: The Sacred Tree of Life. In Mayan mythology the ceiba tree is the link between worlds: its roots in Xibalbá (the underworld), the base of its trunk placed where the humans live sometimes referred to as Kab, and the trunk and branches the dwellings of the Gods and the entrance to the heavens. La Ceiba, which runs through Sunday, November 5, is part of the annual Día de los Muertos Celebración, presented by the Hughes Family Tribute Center.

The exhibition's goal is to build on the authentic Mexican tradition of families gathering in cemeteries to connect with their loved ones who are buried there and to increase public knowledge of the long history of the indigenous peoples among all of us today whether we be descendants of the Mayans, descendants of Mexican and Central American immigrants, recent immigrants, or descendants of other peoples around the world.

"History is written by the winners, but the stories of the "losers" of history have wisdom and meaning for all of us," said Ricardo Alarcón.
