Texas Health Denton offering free flu vaccinations at Our Daily Bread’s Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

DENTON, TEXAS, November 18, 2014 – This Thanksgiving season, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton and Our Daily Bread, a community soup kitchen, are joining forces to ensure the community has a lot to be thankful for — good food and good health.  On Nov. 21, Our Daily Bread will be providing Thanksgiving meals to those in need, and Texas Health Denton will be offering free flu shots to the community.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone over the age of six months receive the influenza vaccine yearly. Each year, the flu affects up to 20 percent of the U.S. population, and accounts for more than 200,000 hospitalizations. Vaccines will be available to those 18 years or older on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, call 940-898-7357.

Date:               Friday, Nov. 21

Time:               10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Location:        Our Daily Bread, affiliated with St. Andrew Presbyterian Church

                       300 W. Oak Street, Suite #100

Laurie Long, Ph.D., community health program manager at Texas Health Denton said, “Getting your flu shot is a simple way to be proactive and prevent illness due to the flu. Having a free clinic like this one is a wonderful opportunity for our residents, and it’s just one way that Texas Health Denton is committed to the health and well-being of our community.”

“We have over 1,500 hungry guests registered for this event,” said Millie Bell, executive director of Our Daily Bread, which usually serves about 200 meals per day to the community. “With half of them homeless, they come to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal and other services we provide. We are so appreciative of the giving spirit of Texas Health Denton for providing one more way to help us care for the less fortunate in our community and keep them healthy.”
