Not Just Blowing Smoke: Education to Combat Tobacco Use

Denton County Public Health (DCPH) in partnership with The Council on Alcohol and Drugs will host a free tobacco education event on January 11th, with sessions targeting current tobacco use trends, mental health, and tobacco cessation programs. According to County Health Rankings, 14% of the adult population in Denton County are considered “current smokers”.

“With technologies such as vaping and e-cigarettes, it is important that we continue to educate our residents and community partners on the health risks associated with tobacco use and second-hand smoke,” stated Dr. Matt Richardson, Director of Public Health. Adding, “We also want to offer interventions to reduce tobacco use in our community.”

DCPH invites residents and organizations to attend the upcoming event:

  • Date: Thursday, January 11th, 2018 from 9am – 1pm
  • Location: Denton County Elections/Technology Services Building, 701 Kimberly Drive, Denton, TX 76208
  • Lunch provided by University Behavioral Health Denton
  • CEUs available to attendees through The Council on Alcohol and Drugs
  • Register to attend via Eventbrite.com – search “Not Just Blowing Smoke” or visit goo.gl/5L2x7h

In addition to tobacco education, DCPH will present the Public Health Awareness Award to the City of Lewisville for the city’s comprehensive smoking ordinance. The Texas Department of State Health Services states, “Placing restrictions on smoking in public places is a key strategy to limit the public’s exposure to second-hand smoke.”
